Description:

25.09.2007 Beijing, China - Beijing's futuristic new national theater, criticized by some for being too ostentatious for its surroundings, opened its doors Tuesday for a trial performance. The National Grand Theater contains a 2,416-seat opera house, a 2,017-seat concert hall and a 1,040-seat theater, the official Xinhua News Agency said. It is scheduled to open at the end of the year.Critics have said the $360 million monument lacks Chinese characteristics and is too expensive and ostentatious to fit into its central Beijing neighborhood, which also houses China's former imperial palace and the 1950s-era Great Hall of the People, the seat of the nation's legislature.More than 20 performances of operas, dramas and ballets will be staged at the theater for trials.
